Serial Experiments Lain BOOTLEG is the third official soundtrack release for Serial Experiments Lain. The set is made up of 2 CDs: A 45-track soundtrack CD consisting of various tracks heard in the anime and a data CD-ROM containing a clock, a dress-up game, a "theatre" game and a shooting gallery game. Despite being called "BOOTLEG", it's a misnomer, being a fully official release.
A .iso disc image of the data CD-ROM can be found on the Internet Archive.
Located on the disc, in the "bootleg" folder, is lain_win.exe.
Opening up this file will show the following window. If you're using a modern version of windows, you won't be able to drag it around yet.
Clicking the red part of the bar underneath the time display ( ) will expand the window. You should be able to drag the window around at this point.
There are a few things you can access here:
We can't really do anything with lain dressup or lain theatre yet, so let's open lain kuma shoot by clicking the minute hand on the clock ().
This game is both very simple and extremely weird and obtuse. You click on bears to "shoot" them and gain points. The game will start with three bears on-screen.
When you shoot a bear, it has a chance to either give you points (5 for brown, 10 for white) or spawn one of lain's family members. These cannot be shot, and will automatically disappear after a while, granting the following score penalties:
After receiving (or losing) your points, another bear will spawn.
There can only be three sprites on screen at any given time, and of these only the bears can be shot at. The rest will disappear automatically.
Also, you can click on lain's face on the clock to show your score:
If you've gotten more than 10 points and equipped the screwdriver in the dressup game, a new critter will have a chance to appear when a bear is shot:
The characters that spawn from these bears' deaths have their penalties multiplied, so watch out- if Miho or Mika spawn from the explosion, you stand to lose a lot of points! To avoid losing all your points, just close the lain kuma shoot window if you see one of lain's family members appear after the explosion.
After crossing certain score thresholds, you can unlock clothes for lain to wear in the dressup game. The amount of points needed seemingly doubles with each unlock:
You can drag any of these items onto lain to make her wear them. The screwdriver and navi have to be dragged into her left and right hands respectively.
After closing the window, lain will walk off, wearing whatever clothes she has on.
After selecting the dark blue icon on the bottom of the clock, you can select the location (represented by the little thumbnail) by clicking the purple bar usually used to expand/shrink the clock window ( ). If you aren't wearing the right clothes, lain will just pass through.
Travelling to certain locations with the right clothes on will cause little animations to play.
If lain is wearing her school uniform, going to the classroom will make smoke come out of her fingers (like in episode 1).
If lain is wearing her town clothes, going to Cyberia will allow her to do a little jig
If lain is wearing her bear pyjamas, going to her bedroom will inspire her to perform incredible tricks while the ghost of Yomoda Chisa drifts past.
Giving lain her school uniform and putting her navi in her left hand, then going to the double doors will cause lain to combust (like in episode 8).
Giving lain the UFO will cause her to turn into an alien. Going to the hallway with a door will have lain open it and spy on Arisu, who is using her navi.
If lain wears her jumper, going outside to the powerlines will cause an encounter with Eiri, who seems a lot less intimidating than usual.
After you reach around 2000 points (Probably 3200, as that's when you unlock the jumper), you unlock a new location to visit: the bridge from the opening. This does not require any specific clothing to function. Clicking it will play a short scene showing a crow freezing in mid-air, after which the anime opening plays.
That's pretty much all there is to be said about the game portion of the CD. There's interesting stuff like videos, screensavers and icons as well.
